520 | |a With his first large project for a vocational school and arts and crafts museum (the Gewerbeschule and what is today the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich), Karl Egender (1897–1969) and his office partner Adolf Steger entered the stage of Neues Bauen in Zurich. Their emblematic building, opened in 1933, provoked heated debate. A first-rate spot in young modern Swiss architecture seemed assured to them. But the pathos of the avant-garde was foreign to Egender, who allowed himself to be tied down neither to a programmatic nor a stylistic line. Openly and undogmatically, he concentrated on grasping precisely each task at hand and on conveying his conception of an architecture that was as well suited to the task as it was original, be it for exhibition or trade fair halls, theatres or cinemas, private or cooperative residential housing, office buildings or department stores, or neighbourhood meeting rooms. The milieus in which the architect felt at home – sport, political cabaret, fashion, stagecraft, workers’ culture, and popular education – guided his concerns and commitments, which he executed with solid technical knowledge and eagerness for experimentation.
