Data export

swisscollections offers various options for obtaining metadata.

Please note the Terms of use. For questions contact info@swisscollections.ch.

Export function on swisscollections

On swisscollection each list of results can be exported completely or selected results can be exported. For each search, the export function can be called up using the button left of the sort setting. There are two export options: "Overview list (CSV)" and "Metadata package (ZIP)".

Overview list (CSV)

The export as overview list allows all interested parties to export their swisscollections search results in a simple list. Only few selected metadata are included.

In many cases, the CSV file can be opened directly in Excel. However, it is possible that some values may be damaged if you open the CSV file directly in Excel. In this case, please proceed as follows: Open an empty Excel document and import the CSV file via "Data" > "Get external data" > "From text". After selecting the CSV file from your file explorer, use the following settings for the import:

  • Delimited
  • File origin: Unicode (UTF-8)
  • Delimiters: Semicolon
  • Text qualifier: "
  • Column data format: Select "Text" for all columns

Metadata package (ZIP)

The metadata package export allows researchers of Digital Humanities and all other interested parties to save their swisscollections search results as data. The metadata for the titles found can, for example, be analyzed in Excel and filtered according to various criteria. However, the machine-readable formats JSON Lines and CSV also enable further processing with scripts, e.g. with Python. If the titles found are digitised and available via e-rara or e-manuscripta and OCR text is available, image and text corpora can be created with the help of the metadata package export.

The metadata package contains all the metadata available through swisscollections. Further information and instructions on how to use the metadata package export can be found in the Best Practice Documentation.

SRU interface

An SRU interface is available for swisscollections. Further information is available at SRU-Schnittstelle.
