520 |a A very full and closely written letter about his experiences whilst traveling in Ireland. He refers to the magnificent telescope of Mr. Cooper, M.P. for Sligo through which he saw the Comet in September. Refers to the French landing in 1798. The town or Killaloo has become very poor since the bishopric relapsed. Mentions a perfect round tower there, annual appeals to Englishmen to save Ennis from famine through failure of t he potato crops as in 1822, 1830 and 1834, when England supplied them with meal. He speaks of the efforts of missionaries in Achill Island to teach the inhabitants habits of industry, and counter efforts of Catholics. He refers to Mr. Blake's house at Renvyle, Connemara, and the prevailing excitement about a projected railroad through Ireland, etc. (Kat. Geigy-Hagenbach)
Er erwähnt u. a. Mr. Cooper M. P. (= Member of Parliament) for Sligo, "who has a magnificent telescope which enabled us to see the Comet ..." Er beschreibt die Killala Bay, "where you may remember the French landed in 1798 ... If the place had been made for the purpose it could not have been better adapted." "Near the place" (Westport) "is the celebrated hill dedicated to St. Patrick to which thousands of people resort at certain days of the year to pay their devotions. Jane ascended it on horse back and has therefore acquired great notice as she is the only Lady that ever ventured on such a daring step." "The leading people here are all agog about the rail road which they hope is to be made through Ireland ..."
