Binggeli, founder of a religious sect, had been committed to that asylum from 1896 to 1901. In the following years Rorschach commenced collecting abundant material on sectarianism and sectarians but soon became aware that the phenomenon of sects could not be understood without studying religious and ecclesiastical history, mysticism and mythology. In 1916 he delivered a first address on the subject, titled “Einiges über Schweizerische Sekten und Sektengründer” (Some remarks on Swiss sects and founders of sects) at a meeting of the Swiss Psychiatric Society. He spoke about Johannes Binggeli and his sect “Waldbruderschaft” (Forest-Brotherhood), and about Anton Unternährer, who at the end of the 18th century founded the Antonian teaching, a precursor of Binggeli’s Forest-Brotherhood. In 1918 Rorschach presented a second lecture to the Swiss Psychiatric Society titled “Weiteres über Schweizerische Sektenbildungen” (Further remarks on Swiss formations of sects). In 1919 he delivered two papers to the Swiss Psychoanalytic Society, which were posthumously published in 1927 titled “Zwei Schweizerische Sektenstifter, Binggeli – Unternährer” (Two Swiss founders of sects, Binggeli and Unternährer). Intending to publish a comprehensive work on Swiss sects Rorschach applied himself to research on that subject until his death. | ||
